The Nurse as Wounded Healer
- In her book titled above, Marion Conti-O'Hare (2002) p2, refers to her colleague Jean Watson (1999) stating, "...if nursing is to be an expression of healing for self, others, and the culture of our health systems, we need to make our wounds conscious" In the 24 years since,they could not have known how much has been learned about trauma and how it impacts us. Nursing is the largest workforce in healthcare. Organizations can use a trauma informed approach and restorative practice to become safer, trusted, collaborative and inclusive, instead of retraumatizing with HR systems that are punitive and retaliatory. Leaders have a duty to care. Post pandemic employees will be harder to retain for leaders who don't. We must do better in caring for caregivers and their support staff if healthcare is to thrive in the decades to come.
